Low stress stockmanship involves working with the mental and emotional characteristics of livestock to gain increased control with less stress on the animals. Low stress stockmanship makes it easier to graze and handle livestock, and it reduces pressure on riparian areas by making it possible to keep a herd together on the uplands. These beneficial techniques will be shared with ranchers at a three-day seminar sponsored by the Lemhi County Horse and Cattlemens Association. The seminar will help local ranchers develop more sustainable range and livestock operations. On the first day of the seminar, students will learn the basics of low stress stockmanship both in the classroom and through instructor demonstration. The next day they will be able to practice the techniques themselves. On the final day, students will receive instruction on using low stress stockmanship while on horseback. Additional information on low stress stockmanship will be available to the public in the form of a training video. The success of the seminar will be determined over the following year as federal agency personnel monitor the health of the land on which these techniques are used. | |||||
